Player Spotlight: David Basa

For this week’s spotlight we have David Basa, 27, the newest addition to the team’s defensive roster. Born and raised in Manila, he graduated Tourism and Hospitality Management from University of Santo Tomas. When he’s not playing for the team, he coaches for UST’s high school team.

When did you start playing football?

I started playing football when I was in first year high school at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran.

Do you play any other sports?

I was also in track and field varsity team when I was in high school and I also play basketball with my friends.

Who is your idol?

I’ve always look up to Steven Gerrard as my idol. I admire his impact in the game and never say die attitude, especially on big games. But as a defender I try to imitate how Mats Hummels plays because he is composed with the ball and he reads the game very well.

If you were given an option to pick another position besides defender, what would it be and why?

Sometimes I like to see myself as a winger or a striker because I love to give assists and score goals.

What are your goals for this year and the upcoming season?

I want to be stronger and more composed at the same time so that the opponents will be intimidated by me. I want to read the game well so that we can be the best defense in the league.

How do you find yourself with playing with Voltes? Have you adjusted to the general dynamic of the team?

The quality and the high tempo while playing with the team can push me to step up my game and it lets me improve a lot. All my teammates are encouraging and I like how the coaches explain all the details on playing my position.

What are your other hobbies besides football?

I like to cook on my free time, pasta and stroganoff are my best dishes. But most of the time, spending quality time with my family is my priority.

Is there anything you’d like to tell our readers?

I would like to ask them to support our team, JP Voltes. The team can showcase good football and will prove that football can be played by anyone: it only takes hard work and perseverance.
